I'm restoring a nice old mountain bike. I'd like to change the 7-speed
cassette to an 8-speed (found nice 8-speed shifters at a bike swap).
Question is... can I just swap cassettes or do I have hub issues? All
advice is appreciated.

I'm very unsure of this, but I also have an older 7 speed mountain bike and
seemed to remember that the rear spacing between the dropouts was slightly
less than the now standard 135 mm. I think that someone told me that it was
close enought to allow me to pull out the rear triangle to make a 135 mm hub
fit that would accept an 8 speed cassettee. ...again, I'm not positive here,
but pointing out that you might want to check this spacing also.

The bike is a 1990 Fuji Suncrest. I haven't removed the cassette yet
to eyeball the hub.

You can eyeball the hub without removing the cassette. I'm guessing
it's a Shimano of some sort and by its age probably a Uniglide
freehub. See Sheldon Brown's cassette web page for compatibility
