Subject: Switching from Avid mechs to Hayes hydro brakes???
I put Avid mechs on my mountain bike a while back, and hence I didn't have
to change my XT brake/shifter system. I came across a good deal on some
Hayes hydraulic brakes. Can I just remove the "brake part" of my XT
brake/shifter system and put these on in place? Any sites/pics showing how
to do this? Thanks!

No. Unless your shifters are separate from your brake levers you'll need
new shifters as well.
