I am looking for tire recommendations.

For the last few years I have been riding 26 mm house brand, Kevlar belted
tires from Performance. Performance customer service tells me that they
have discontinued making the tire and didn't have any good suggestions for a
replacement.

I am looking for a folding tire in the 25 - 26 MM size that has a good
balance between riding and flat protection.

I admit I was taking artistic license with that phrase. What I meant
was that they appear to have a slightly thicker tread than a conti2000
or 3000 or michelin pro race. Enough to have a token "inverted tread"
pattern. Nevertheless they don't feel slow. they look like the
might, but they don't. They feel as fast a conti2000 or 3000, and -
very- noticably silkier than either of those, and they make the
panaracer stradius elite's that I had before feel like concrete.

I'm still on my first set and haven't gotten any slices yet even after
touring thru Philadelphia and New Jersey on them.

I'd be very interested to hear what others think about them. I'd also
like to know the thread count. Carl?

I'm sure they ride great. I've been riding Cheng Shin tires for years
rebranded with one name or another. Do these have any flat
protection? The only drawback I've found to their tires is that they
get glass cuts pretty easy in the rain. So do a lot of tires for that
matter.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I can't say enough good
things about the six dollar cheng shin at chucksbikes.com right now.
After two rides I bought a stack of six more, and am considering
buying another 10. They measure the same 24mm as a panaracer stradius
elite, but have better flat protection and yet feel more like a
michelin pro race.

Frank, indulge me and try one and tell us what you think.

Thanks! This is not a bargain, the old Perf Forte 700x26 was a true
24-26mm wide tire that had a list weight of about 250-260. The current
Perf Forte GT2 700x25 appears to measure 22-23mm wide and has a list
weight of about 320g. Further, it appears the Forte GT2 700x28 is not
a true 28mm tire, but one that measures 23 or 24mm wide. Sad.

I've got a rear Bonty Hardcase too. I've also found it to be tough but
zero in suppleness and harder to trust than my standard Michelin Axial
Carbons, which also look to be discontinued. It's pretty interesting
how much your ride can change based on a tire's feel.

The Axial Carbon is still around, but called the Krylion Carbon these
days.

I've been very pleased with them too.

Skinny! The 25 measures 23.5 mm on a Torelli Master.

Measurements taken using a Mitutoyo digital caliper and are probably
+/- 0.1mm at best.

Woohoo, a simple search shows that they do. I may have found my new
all-round tire. Hopefully they'll be as strong as the incredible value
of the 27" version.

I've got the 1 1/4" version on my Raleigh. Compared to the gumwall
anvils with squirmy treads that are usually fitted to such bikes, they
ride silently, corner like a dream, and have been flat free since last
summer. Only $13/each at aebike.com in the 27" size. If they made
that basic model in a 700x28, I'd likely put it on my two sporting
bikes. Easy to mount, cut resistant, and light. I like them a lot.

I sent a note to Panaracer last night - got an almost immediate reply
saying the still made the Forte and Forte Pro, but for a kevlar belted
tire, they recommended the Pasela TG. I actually carry a Forte Pro
Kevlar around as a spare. Pity it's only a 23.

Probably rim width. I have some of the black sidewall ones mounted at
the moment. I'll check them when I get home.

For real low price if you can stand a wire bead, I found the Vittoria
Zaffiro to be an OK tire. Unfortunately, like the Forte GT2, the 25
runs narrow. I don't know about the 28, the local Performance didn't
have them.

I'm a 180 pound (82kg) rider, for the first time in this millennium
(I've been up around 188). I've had real good luck with Vittoria Rubino
Pro in the 23mm size, both the folding and the wire bead models, over
the past three years. I had to replace one today after 2800 km due to a
nasty glass cut, but I've been getting about 4600 - 4800 km from rears,
and twice that from fronts. The tires seem not to get many cuts on the
center "tread" compared to Michelin Pro2Race, and I've had very few
flats, despite the declining condition of roads in Southern California.
These cost $22 - $24 around here.

I also have been using Bontrager Race Lite 25mm (labeled "Dual Compound
- Triple Puncture Protection") that came on a 5200 I bought last August.
I rode the rear for 5400 km with only one flat. The front is
soldiering on. The replacement tire I bought is a wire bead and I just
noticed it is labeled "Hard Case"; I paid $30 for that tire. I have
about 500 km on the "new" tire so far.

These tires aren't as inexpensive as Performance tires, but they let you
ride and not worry....

The Fortes aren't 26 either... usually about 24.5 for me.

The old Fortes are made by the same company that makes Panaracer,
Rivendell and Grand Bois tires to name a few.

My guess is that some of the current Panaracer Stradius line is going
to be similar to the Forte, perhaps the Stradius Elite TG which comes
in 700x26 and has a Kevlar belt under the tread.

Then there is the Panaracer Pasela TG which comes in a 25 or 28 -
watch Nashbar for sales on these. I've tried the Panaracer Urban Max
in 700x32 on a tandem and found it to ride surprisingly well. I have
some Pasela 32s to try someday soon.

As for the Rivendell tires, they come in at a true 28 or above. The
kevlar Ruffy-Tuffy is a dog IMO - you might as well use a Specialize
Armadillo.

Dear Orin,

I tried some Panaracers a few years ago and liked them, but the model
was promptly discontinued. Thanks for reminding me about them--I'll
think about trying them again.

A quick check shows my old tan Kevlar bead-and-belt Forte 700x26 to be
26 mm at 110 psi. Yours might be at a lower pressure. Or they could be
from a slightly narrower production run (or mine could be from a
slightly oversized run). Or our tires could be identical, but mounted
on rims different enough to produce tire-width changes.

As for the new 700 x "25" Forte GT2, mine measures closer to 22 mm
than to 22.5 mm on my rear rim at 120 psi. I was surprised by how many
fewer pump strokes will inflate it, but that's the only advantage that
I've noticed so far.

Cheers,

Carl Fogel

Thanks to all that responded!

It is interesting to see that many others used the performance tires also.
They were a great combination of ride, flat protection, and value. They
went on sale many times a year and at least once a year they offered a
three-pack for really cheap. I think that I have 10 tires left but will
multiple bikes at multiple locations they will not last long.

I will try some of the suggestions. I have purchased cyclocross tires from
biketiresdirect so I will also ask them for suggestions.

$28.50 from ProBikeKit for Pro2Race -- but that's for 23mm. Shipping
from England was as fast as from Ohio (Nashbar), and there was no
shipping charge. I don't get how they can do that. I did get a little
hit on my credit card for exchanging dollars to pounds, though.

BTW, I got some of the Bontrager Race-Lite Hardcase (which are not
"lite") in 28s for commuting, and these are some of the toughest tires
I have every owned. I actually had a small nail angle through the
casing without giving me a flat and without destroying the tire. The
ride is O.K., but at maximum inflation, they do not roll well over
small objects, like gravel. It feels like my rear end is sliding out
from under me -- hard to explain. I get thrown around less with other
tires, and the wet traction is good but not great. No pinch flats or
any kind of flats, though -- which is pretty amazing consider all the
crap I ride over. -- Jay Beattie.

Performance has its Forte GT2 tires in 700x25 and 28 for cheap:
Wire Bead - $7.99
http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=4780

Folding kevlar bead - $12.99
http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=4664

Don't know about the quality of the GT2, but if its "as good" as the
old 700x26 Forte tires, then its a bargain!

Dear Frank & BFD,

I used the folding 700x26 from Performance and still have a few left.
(I'm bitter about them being discontinued.)

I bought 4 of the cheap Forte GT2 700x25 with wire beads, hoping that
I'd be pleasantly surprised.

The surprise was that they aren't 25 mm--I measured mine at closer to
22 mm after an impact puncture on my first ride, rolling back into the
same driveway that hasn't bothered me in twenty years.

They're also noticeably harder to mount than the old tan sidewall
Forte 700x26 folding tires.

I may try the wider version, hoping that the claimed 28 mm is actually
down around 25~26.

Cheers,

Carl Fogel

They've got the Prima Plus 2 back at Nashbar in 25mm with kevlar and a
black sidewall for $10. I've had great luck with that tire before,
only got a pinch flat due to not airing the tires before a ride. I've
still got one hanging in the garage, but it doesn't have a mate.

It's probably the least thrilling tire to look at that I can think of,
but it's durable enough, supple enough, and dirt cheap. Pretty light
if that matters to you.

Those were great tires! I was very sad when they discontinued them.
Since then I have tried the Michelin Pro 2 Race tires in size 25 and
found them to be quite comfy. I put about 750 miles on a set and they
really don't show any wear (I weigh 125 lbs., though). Now I'm trying
Continental GP 4000, size 25. Only had one ride so far, but I like
the idea of the Vectran belt (and the color matches my new, custom
bike perfectly). I will probalby choose one of those two tires to be
my new standard. I know they're expensive, but tires seem to last a
pretty long time for me. I'll be careful to watch for sales to pick
up replacements.

Generally on Ebay can find Pro2Race for $35 each or at biketiresdirect in
700x25. Seems like a good choice and I like them though am curious how
much longer the Krylion Carbon lasts and if its a bit less supple.

I've paid about $20 each for my last couple of sets of Michelin Carbons
(same as Krylion Carbon). If you shop around you should be able to get
them cheap too -- on sale at Performance/Nashbar, on eBay, etc.

I'd say they last at least 50% longer than the Pro, and yes they are a
little less supple but still nice riding. I've found them to be very flat
and cut resistant.

Panaracer Paselas are my all-time favorite tire in the universe. If
you shop around, you can find Kevlar-belted ones for ~$20. I run 28s
on my skinny-tire bike, 35s on my touring bike, and 26x1.75"s on my
Nexus-8 beach cruiser. I usually get 2000-3000 miles out of a rear.

I really like the Pasela TGs too. Really smooth. They have the closest
feel to a big fat old sewup that I've found in a clincher.

I have a set of the 700c x 28s on one bike and 700c x 25s on 2 others. I
like the 25mm tires a little better.

I also like Continental 700c x 23 Grand Prix tires. They have a completely
different feel - more solid.

That's too bad. The 700x26 tire from Performance was I believe a
Panaracer. Nevertheless, it was one of the great bargains that could
be found at $20 or even less with one of those coupons.

Good 700x25 tires are available, but not cheap. Check out Michelin and
Avocet (if you can find them). Expect to pay over $30/tire, sigh...
