Subject: Ultegra WH-6600 (or R600) wheel bearing access
Looks like the schematic for the Ultegra WH-6600 gives access to service
free ball bearings. I was told by my LBS, however, that these wheels have
a sealed cartridge and the entire cartridge gets replaced!$&@#. Which is
right? If the former is the case, it looks like I will need a new 20mm bike
wrench to get the inner retaining nut loose. Does anyone know if this is
correct?

saves 24 grams per hub!

yes it does - they're referred to as the "lock nut unit".

If you look at the schematic it is not clear what the bearings ride on. Is
it their own cartridge? If so, do I just buy the cartridges and then do the
lock nut adjustment as I would on the old cup and cone? Also, are the
cartridges available usually at well stocked LBS ?

For anyone familiar with servicing Shimano products, the cones on
which the conventional bearing balls (seventeen 5/32" balls in each
cup) orbit are conspicuous. The right cone is located on the axle
where the enclosed numeral "5" on the service diagram points. The left
cone is integrated with the inner part of the "left hand lock nut
unit" (number 7 on the diagram) as noted by mr beam earlier in the
thread.

why would you doubt the shimano service diagrams??? they made the
thing, not the sales jockey at the shop.
