Subject: What's happened to my barcon shifters?
Hi all:

My Surly Long Haul Trucker's outfitted with Dura-ace 9-speed bar-cons
and a Shimano DeoreXT M760 rear derailleur (Rapid Rise.) I've got
about 1,800 miles on the bike and, up 'till today, the shifting's been
flawless.

A couple of days ago I removed the rear derailleur shift lever in
order to tighten the body fixing bolt and then I put things back
together. Everything was working fine until today when the rear
derailleur suddenly shifted itself to the large cog. In attempting to
work the rear derailleur lever it was clear I'd lost indexed shifting
and didn't have friction shifting either; there didn't seem to be
enough torque on the lever fixing screw and the derailleur would move
itself to the large cog if I didn't hold the lever in place by hand.
Clearly, I hadn't tightened the lever fixing screw sufficiently.

I got home, took things apart again, re-fitted the pieces and then
torqued the lever fixing screw good and tight. Things are "sorta"
working: the lever is index shifting OK through the first 5 or 6
smaller cogs, then seems to go into friction mode for the next 2 or 3
larger cogs and then "clicks" into the largest cog. Looking at the
various pieces of the shifter I can't see anything obviously wrong,
but something's clearly not right. I've tried the usual adjustments
to the tension on the cable and that's not helped; at some point in
the shifting among the larger cogs the indexing disappears.

Any clues about what's going on here?

TIA.

Tom Young

That's exactly what caused my problems on my first set of Shimano bar-
cons back in 1990. I'm now careful to line up the indexing plate
properly before reassembly. Also, make sure you put lots of torque on
the hold-down screw. If it gets loose, the shifter will stop indexing
properly, even when it stays assembled.

Look at this PDF:

Rotate part 2 on your right shifter 90 degrees and reassemble. Now try. If
that doesn't work, turn part 2 90 degrees again.....
