Peter mentioned earlier the huge growth of product options, which is either a boon or a curse - I leave the conclusion to others - as this proliferation opens as many opportunities as it closes doors. Here's my end-of-difficult-day story today. Employee of one of our (non-bike) vendors strolls in after hours accompanied by 5~6kg yapping mini-canine and asks for a front basket. Yes, to carry companion on rides(!). I know his Chinese $400 hybrid so I offer a few quick-mount baskets. He chooses a wicker model with 'universal' mount. He called half an hour later to say the mount's band won't span the 'new improved' oversize handlebar on his new Chinese road bike. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971

From shade tree auto mechanic experience, where were the parts coming from? OOS in oakland? Enter Frank Berto! thanks frank, you're the greatest. A librarian in Palm Bleach shoved Berto's Rodale old bike book to me and therein I read that the Asians had agreed! this was unreal at the time, had agreed on parts standardization. Incroyable! new economics at the source.

The 'claw' is too far forward; probably only an issue with indexed shifting. Easily remedied, too. I fashioned a plate with a new 'claw' out of a washer , placed it between the dropout and the RD. My other, slightly newer GJ has Campy dropouts.

My other, slightly > newer GJ has Campy dropouts. > Yeah, after thinking about it I came up with that idea too. I have some of the washers with a lip that came on the Huret "bolt on" gear hangers - the kind that fall off when you remove the wheel and the chain gets twisted and.... I'm going to modify it to work with an old Suntour Cyclone RD. I have a complete almost NOS set of Jubilee derialleurs. Back in the day I built up a 17+ Lb. steel time trial bike. The Jubilee FD broke on the first ride so they went back into stock and I switched to something stronger. The other option would be to find a Huret Success or ECO RD. They were ugly but worked really well for friction shifters. Chas.

The other evening I was out on my favorite beater, a 1977-79 Motobecane Le Champion. I was chasing a guy of a CF bike up a short hill. I downshifted to my 26T and started stomping on it. That's when I felt that ugly sensations and noise of sucking a RD into the rear wheel. First time since about 1973. When I got home I decided to ease my sorrow and build up another beater. I had the Le Champion field stripped down the bare frame in about 15 minutes. I grabbed another Moto frame, a 1974-76 Grand Jubilee. I thought it had Campy dropouts.... Nooo, it has the bastard Huret dropouts with their proprietary gear hanger. Chas.
