Subject: schwinn cruiser headtube size?
I got this brand new Schwinn Cruiser Six frameset from maybe late 90s. The
headtube seems to be 1 1/8" (it ain't 1" for sure), and the frok that came
with it is a 1" fork (WTF?). I try to install 1 1/8" headset cups, and they
seem to be too big, as the edges of the headtube start bulging out slightly.
Did Schwinn have a proprietory headtube size for their cruisers? Is there a
size between 1" and 1 1/8" and if so, who makes headsets for that? TIA.

If yo have bollixed your frame such that the corrct BMX size cups
won't work right, you may be able to use a 1-1/8" headset reamer to
prep your frame for a 1-1/8" fork. If the head tube measures close to
1.50" on the outside diameter, as many American frames do, there will
still be plenty of wall thickness left-- about 2.0mm. You want to
have at least 1.5mm there.

I've done this a few times with cruisers and trikes.

I thought it was 32.7mm frame bores.

Older American forks have thicker-walled steer tubes, so stem quills
for them are 21.1mm in diameter instead of 22.2mm, with small-bored
headset locknuts to match.

Dia-Compe makes a 1" threadless headset in the BMX size. Odyssey and
Problem Solvers have both made sleeves that adapt 1" ISO headsets to
American frames.

Chalo's right, 33.7. I just looked that up. Yesterday I measured a cup
from a $10 headset. Besides Chalo's suggestions, standard cheap BMX
headsets abound, unchanged for some 50+ years.

Thanks. I looked up bikepartsusa.com, and their bmx headset cup is 32.5mm.
http://www.bikepartsusa.com/product_info.asp?p=01%2D80091 I'm confused.

Probably just what you need. You might call them to confirm but frankly
$10 headsets are not as close a tolerance as bearings in jet engines. At
40% off, you can't lose much! Maybe they measured with one of those
cute little plastic toy calipers?

Ttraditioal "USA" or "BMX" headsets are still used on some cruisers,
lowriders etc. Cup bore 33.2 and thread 1" x24
