Would the shimano ultegra 6603 triple front derailleur work ok with a 9s cassette (even though it states it should be paired with 10s cassettes) ?

Yep, a problem and we have stocked up on FDs that were made for the 52/42 combo. As Sheldon pointed out, the 105 10s FD, made for a 50/39, works but it doesn't travel as far per shift, with 9s left STI, since it is optimized for 10s ring spacing, closer together than 9s. shimano wants you to UPGRADE, of course.

Not a problem with the chain or cogset but the shifter. Also, 6603 and 7803 front derailleurs will not work well with 52/42/30 triples as the cage is so long it hots the middle ring when in the largest. Samo for 105 10s FD.

Ok, So what are we 52-42-30 lovers to do when or FDs wear out? Yes, the number of speeds on the cassette has little to do with it. The important difference betwixt the "9-speed" and "10-speed" triple front derailers is that the "9-speed" version was optimized for a 52-42-30, while the "10-speed" is optimized for 52-39-30. If you're not hung up on the Ultegra label, and assuming you have a 52-42-* crank, you would likely do better with a 105 or Tiagra derailer. These are optimized for 50-39-* chainrings, an 11 tooth gap instead of 13, and closer to the 10 tooth difference from your 52-42-* crank (if that's what you have.) I'm asking because that's the only front derailleur that seems available in the ultegra series which might fit
