There are lots of plastic ones too. But the essence of a bento box is
its compartments, which is why the little top tube bags are neither
boxes nor bento.

The one Performance sells is identical to the product pictured in the
link above, except it is called Profile Design "E Pack".

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=23200&subcategory_ID=2310

I have one and it does work great for carrying wallet, cell phone,
power bar, etc. That stuff fits in the back pockets of my jersey OK
too so I really can't tell you why I have it..

I've seen one recently in an LBS that has a clear plastic cover
instead of the mesh one in the pictured item (and the Profile Design
one). It would provide rain protection if that was a factor.
Otherwise it also was identical.

Two things - my thighs do tend to rub on it when I'm standing to
pedal, but it's not a big deal. Also, I think the velcro attachment
straps could scuff up the paint and clear coat on the top tube. I
just put some clear packing tape around the top tube at those
attachment points and I think that will prevent that. Oh, another
thing, I put a little rectangle of cardboard from a cardboard box on
the bottom of the container to cushion it a little - I noticed if I
was carrying hard things (e.g. cell phone or keys), that they would
rattle around a little (again thinking of damage tothe paint).

Should be called a Wedgo-Box not Bento-Box.

I've had a Bento box in my bike for the last several years. I can put
my wallet, a cell phone and 5 to 6 granola bars. Granted that in a
roadie world (which I usually live in). The Bento box (triathletes
only) makes me look like a geek. Butbutbut, I look like a geek with or
without the Bento. So, I keep using it. I haven't gone hungry for a
long time. I've saved other cyclists that were about to bonk on more
than one occasion. and, I don't need to wear pocketed jerseys anymore.
I can now wear fruit of the loom sleeveless t-shirts and still have
someplace to store my goodies.

Bentos are great,

Andres

I call it a cookie dispenser.

The Bento box comes in 2 sizes. Most people get the large. The
difference is the length along the toptube. The fabric isn't so great
and they loose shape even though they have plastic stiffeners in them.

A much better product is made by Soma and it's called a Munch Box
<http://www.somafab.com/bags_mun.html >. It is lined with vinyl and
the goo and other food garbage can be washed out. It is shorter and
higher than the Bento box most people are using. The short box will
have less chance of ticking your knees.

In addition to food or phone, my box works great for the battery pack
of my light. The run of wire is very short and you stuffing the
battery into the box is much easier than working with straps or
clamps.

The Triathlon Marketing Coup of 2004!
called a 'bento box'.

I call it a "bag on the top tube", but, then... I once won dinner for
two for naming the center for Mexican-American unity in Houston; I
suggested that they call it the "Houston Mexican-American Unity
Center".

Dear Dan,

Perhaps a Japanese Bento lunch box?

The only thing Japanese about these bags is the name. Real Japanese bento
boxes are made from wood or metal. Personally, I do not like the bike bags
that sit on the top tube. Every time I stand up on a climb, they snag on my
shorts. Maybe they work better on bigger frames.

Better than under the saddle where they look like swinging testicles.

If you get one, look for one where the Velcro attachment for the
top flap curves around the corner.

With the flat attachment like the one shown, you'll find that
your knees/thighs brush the thing and tend to open it up and/or
chafe the skin.

I've got three of 'em with the flawed design. I *think* I saw
one where they got it right at the local Performance shop.
